Music to provide hope to Bihar’s Musahar community
Think of Bihar and you will often find people centering their conversation around its rich cultural heritage, agriculture, migration and the state’s growing aspirations. But, in the talk of growing state, we miss on communities whose stories remain largely unheard.
One such community is Musahar community. It comes with an unbelievable history, unheard present and a lot of struggle in future if nothing is done for them today.
Historically among the most marginalised Dalit communities in Bihar, Musahars have lived for generations on the fringes of society, facing extreme poverty, landlessness, social exclusion and limited access to education and basic services.
Even the name “Musahar” carries a painful history. It is commonly understood to have originated from mūs (rat) and ahar (food), referring to a time when extreme poverty and food scarcity forced members of the community to hunt field rats for survival. What may have once been a means of survival gradually became a deeply stigmatising identity.
Over generations, many Musahar families became part of Bihar’s agrarian economy as landless agricultural labourers, often depending on seasonal work and daily wages for their livelihoods.
Particularly in Bihar, the community is recognised among the Mahadalit communities, identified as among the most socio-economically vulnerable sections of the Scheduled Caste population.
Unfortunately, the history attached is not just in books, the consequences are faced by many families even in present in their everyday life.
A large number of Musahar families remain dependent on daily-wage and agricultural labour, with little or no agricultural land of their own. Many settlements, commonly referred to as tolas, are located on the outskirts of villages and can remain physically and socially separated from the larger community. Such isolation can make access to schools, healthcare, sanitation, housing, drinking water and other essential civic amenities considerably more difficult.
While struggle to live is one big problem for the community, education is another major challenge. For children growing up in families struggling to meet basic needs, remaining in school can become difficult when household survival depends on every available hand. Especially girls and women are the ones who face additional barriers.
There are also difficult social realities that cannot be ignored; caste-based discrimination, stigma, malnutrition, poor living conditions, substance abuse and domestic distress. While constitutional safeguards and government welfare programmes have created important avenues for inclusion and development, ensuring that these opportunities actually reach families in the most remote settlements remains an important challenge.
The question, therefore, is not simply what problems the Musahar community faces.
The more difficult question is what it would take to ensure that a child born into a Musahar family does not inherit the same limitations that shaped the lives of generations before them.
While some may opt to churn out some occasional acts or may help with one time charity or short-term interventions. Sustainable change has to begin somewhere with things that remain long after a programme, a visit or a donation is over.
It is important that the child is staying in school. A young person is learning a skill that takes him to a dignified employment. A family gaining a stable livelihood instead of depending entirely on uncertain daily wages. A girl being able to continue her education. A household having access to healthcare, clean water, a secure home and the confidence to participate equally in society.
Individually, these may appear to be small steps. Together, they can change the direction of a family – and eventually, of a community.
It is against this larger backdrop that Strums, a social initiative, is trying to explore a different way of interacting with such communities that have historically remained at the margins.
The initiative is built around a simple idea: music can be more than performance. It can create confidence, bring people together, encourage expression and open pathways towards learning and opportunity. But for such an idea to have lasting value, music cannot remain limited to an occasional workshop or performance. It must become a doorway to mentorship, education, skills and sustained engagement.
For Strums, the journey with the Musahar community is therefore envisioned not as a one-time intervention, but as a process of listening and learning first, followed by sustained engagement wherever meaningful opportunities emerge.
That means understanding what children dream about, what young people aspire to become and what families need to build more secure futures. It also means recognising that meaningful solutions cannot simply be brought into a community from outside. They have to be developed with the people they are intended to serve.
Perhaps meaningful change does not always begin with a large programme.
Sometimes, it begins with one child being given the opportunity to stay in school. One young person discovering a skill. One family finding a more secure source of livelihood. One voice being heard where it had previously gone unnoticed.
For the Musahar community of Bihar, there is a long history behind the struggles visible today. But that history does not have to determine the future of the generations that follow.
The first step may simply be to listen—to understand the stories, recognise the dignity behind them and remain committed to the longer journey of change.
Because before a community can be transformed, its stories must first be heard.
